You think you have a good general lighting in your environment but also think there is just something missing, something to give the space the ability to set the mood, maybe get a romantic feel or get the guest's atention to some part of the space. That's where accent lighting comes to brighten everything up. I am going to show you how to make a cool indirect minimalistic light fixture that is also smart so it can be controlled in all sorts of ways. And the best part - it can be made with simple tools and inexpensive materials and looks very professional.

Supplies

An aluminum U channel of desired length 15x15x2 mm cross section

12 V adapter - 3.5 A rated
LED strip RGB 5050 60 LEDs per meter
WiFi LED controller RGB type
Double sided sticky tape 12 mm wide
End caps (I 3D printed mine)
RGB LED cable

Tools:
Saw (hack or miter)
Tape measure
Soldering iron with solder wire and flux

Step 1: Prepare the Aluminum Extrusion (profile)

Allright, the first thing we need is an aluminum or aluminium U channel. I like to use these anodised ones couse I like the surface finish.

You want to measure the length of the profile that will represent the wanted height of the lamp minus a few milimeters for the bumpers but more on that later.

Now, the next step could be made with just a hacksaw, but a guy's gotta have class, don'chya think? And using a sliding miter saw, with vidia teeth cutting blade, the cut looks factory made.

This next feature is important for the estetics of the cabeling. You need to cut just the side of the profile so the flat multistrand LED cable can exit thrugh there. Make this cut about 5 inches or 12.5 cm from the end of the channel.

Step 2: The End Caps

To make the ends of the profile softer to your wall or floor (as for not to scratch them or yourself) you can make something like this - a plastic or rubber cube I designed in fusion 360 and 3D printed. Of course you can make something like this by hand with hot glue, plaster or a similar material.

Step 3: The LED Strip

In this particular design I used an RGB LED strip, but You are free to use any of the strips out there in the wild market, just make sure that the strips width fits inside the profile. I soldered the LED cable suited for that particular strip and bent it as shown as to fit it thrugh the cutout.

Step 4: Wifi Controller and Power Supply

For the controler I find it best to use a Wifi RGB smart controller that is powered by a 12V adapter. This strip draws about 1 amp per meter length so pick the supply acordingly or it will burn out or simply won't work at all due to electronoc safety circuitry. So for 3 meters of strip use at least 3.5 amp supply or more. To glue the controller a double sided sponge tape is best used.

Step 5: Glue the LED Strip Inside the Channel

The only thing that's left is to connect the 4 pin connector and fix the LED strip on the inside of the channel using its adhesive backing and guess what - you're done! Just connect the DC jack of the supply to the controller and voila - its finished.

Step 6: Fire It Up and Closing Notes

So, whadiya think? Tell me in the comment section. Personaly I made a lot of these Linea lamps for friends and customers and they all keep them on like 24/7. There are couple of versions You can make - the floor to ceiling type or as I call it ground to air lamp. The other is the one I just showed You which is shorter and You just place it in the room corner to create a cool pyramidal light shape. This thing rocks and its light is enough to have the whole living room lit with your favorite tone. Your friends and foes are gonna be so jealous.
